How to Install Zoom on openSUSE

The pandemic issue has changed our lives and the way we work. Now, many companies and individuals do remote work and even meetings. These meetings are supported by necessary software such as Zoom. That’s why learning how to install Zoom on a major distribution like openSUSE is necessary, so you don’t miss a thing.

What is Zoom?

Zoom is one of the main software applications that allows us to make video conferences. All this organized in the form of meetings where we can invite many people to join simultaneously. One of its main advantages is that Zoom is available for different PC operating systems and smartphones.

As you can imagine, Zoom has been designed for companies because in addition to the large number of members who can join the meeting, it also has many tools to manage it.

With Zoom, you can send files, screenshots and desktop sharing. So, this has made it very popular and necessary in numerous instances.

Let’s get started.

Install Zoom on openSUSE

Zoom is not an Open-Source tool, but this does not prevent us from downloading and installing it on openSUSE. This is thanks to the great support offered by Linux developers. This makes it possible to have several ways to install it.

Method 1: Installing Zoom on openSUSE via RPM package

The developers provide us with an RPM package that we can use on openSUSE. To achieve this, we have to download it from the Zoom website, or faster using the terminal.

Open it, and before you start, update the system.

sudo zypper up

Then make sure the wget package is installed.

sudo zypper in wget

Now proceed to download the Zoom RPM package.

wget https://zoom.us/client/latest/zoom_openSUSE_x86_64.rpm
Download and install Zoom on openSUSE

Before installing the package, you should add the Zoom GPG key that is used during the installation of the package. First download it:

wget -O package-signing-key.pub https://zoom.us/linux/download/pubkey

Now add it:

sudo rpm --import package-signing-key.pub

Thereafter, you can install Zoom on openSUSE

sudo zypper install zoom_openSUSE_x86_64.rpm

After installing the Zoom dependencies, you will be able to run the application from the main menu.

Method 2: Using Snap to install Zoom

Another way to install Zoom on openSUSE is to use Snap. Remember that Snap is Canonical’s own technology that aims to revolutionize the way packages are installed on Linux.

To install Snap, we need to add an external repository from openSUSE itself:

sudo zypper addrepo --refresh https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/system:/snappy/openSUSE_Leap_15.3 snappy

Then, import the GPG key to the system:

sudo zypper --gpg-auto-import-keys refresh

Refresh Zypper

sudo zypper dup --from snappy

And now install, Snap.

sudo zypper install snapd

To use it, you need to start and enable the Snap service.

sudo systemctl enable --now snapd

Likewise with snapd.apparmor to improve snapd security.

sudo systemctl enable --now snapd.apparmor

Finally, using snap install Zoom:

sudo snap install zoom-client

You can also run it from the main menu at the end of the installation.

The Zoom interface

Using zoom is easy to use, just run it, and you will see this screen.

To access a meeting, just click on this link, and you will see this screen.

Note that to access a meeting in Zoom, a code and occasionally a password is required, so make sure you have one.

As you can see, there is not much of a trick to using it.

Uninstall Zoom on openSUSE

To uninstall Zoom, you have to consider the chosen method of installation. In case you have used Zypper, just run this command.

sudo zypper remove zoom

But in the case of Snap this one

sudo snap remove zoom-client

This way you will no longer have it on your system.

After reading this post, you now know how to install Zoom on openSUSE, and we have presented you with two different methods to achieve the desired goal.

I hope you liked the post and help to share it.
